Item Community Participation and Sustainability of Farmers’ Associations Supported by Central Archdiocesan Province Caritas Association In Mukono District, Uganda(Uganda Management Institute, 2016-01) BUKENYA, Joseph; Kiiza, Alfred Kenneth (Supervisor); LUGEMOI, Wilfred Bongomin (Supervisor)The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between community participation and sustainability of CAPCA supported farmers’ associations in Mukono district. The three objectives were to; establish a relationship between participatory planning and sustainability of the four farmers’ associations; examine a relationship between participatory implementation and sustainability of the four farmers’ associations; establish a relationship between participatory monitoring and sustainability of the four farmers’ associations. The results were obtained using a cross sectional study design that applied qualitative and quantitative approaches. A sample of 232 respondents was selected using probability and non-probability techniques. The findings showed that there was statistically significant relationship between; participatory planning and sustainability of the farmers’ associations with r= 0.534, participatory implementation and sustainability of the farmers’ associations with r= 0.578, participatory monitoring and sustainability of the farmers’ associations with r= 0.422. In conclusion, there is a positive relationship between community participation and sustainability of the four farmers’ associations in Mukono district. The study recommends that farmers’ associations should be provided with capacity building in sustainability and self-initiative strategies. The farmers should also be trained to participate in decision making for their organizations so that they develop ownership to the associations’ planning, implementation and monitoring. Future research should be done under a similar topic beyond the geographical and timing scope of this study and /or using a longitudinal study. Future research should also be carried out using other independent variables that contribute to the sustainability of farmers’ associations, besides those used in this study.Item English Language Proficiency and Students’ Performance in Secondary Schools in Rwanda: A Case Study of Bugesera District(Uganda Management Institute, 2015-01) BAGAMBE, Paul Mukarage; Kiiza, Alfred Kenneth (Supervisor); Mugabe, Robert (Supervisor)The purpose of this study was to establish the influence of English language proficiency on students’ academic performance in Secondary Schools in Bugeresa District. The objectives of this study were; to investigate the extent to which Literacy skills influence students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Bugeresa District; to establish how School Learning Environment influences students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Bugeresa District; to assess the extent to which Basic interpersonal communication skills influence students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Bugeresa District. The study was a descriptive case study design. Both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods and analysis were used. A sample of 184 respondents was got from an accessible population of 346 respondents with a response rate of 100% obtained. The findings of this study show that: There is a positive and significant relationship between literacy skills and students’ academic performance in secondary schools, that there is a significant positive relationship between the learning environment and students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Bugeresa District as well as in other schools in Rwanda and that there is a high and positive correlation coefficient significant relationship between basic interpersonal communication skills and students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Bugesera District. The study concludes that English language proficiency greatly influences students’ performance. The study recommends that government authorities in Rwanda and Bugesera District in particular together with parents should ensure that these skills are imparted in students right away from their tender age. It further recommends that education stakeholders should ensure that learning environment is conducive enough for meaningful students’ academic performance to be realized. Lastly, the study recommends that stakeholders be it government, district education authorities, teachers and parents should try to encourage students to speak the language of instruction to be able to understand English language and this will lead to improved students’ performance.Item Factors Influencing the Implementation of the Strategic Plan in Uganda Red Crosses Society. A Case Study of Uganda Red Cross Society, Mbarara Branch.(Uganda Management Institute, 2014-08) NSUBUGA, Richard; Kiiza, Alfred Kenneth (Supervisor); Mugabe, Robert (Supervisor)The study explored the factors influencing the implementation of the strategic plan in Mbarara Red Cross Branch. Mbarara Red Cross Branch has been implementing different humanitarian programmes since its inception in 1952. Since its existence, it had developed a number of strategic plans and the current one of 2011 to 2016 is facing a lot of challenges. During of this implementation process, management has introduced new programmes and projects which were not embedded in the current operational strategic plan (2011 to 2016). This could attribute to changing of organizational structure, leadership challenges and mobilisation. Data on three independent variables of Organizational Structure, Top Management and Resource mobilsation was collected from 74 participants whose response rate was 100%. Data was collected through the use of a structured questionnaire, interviews, observation, and documentary analysis. Qualitative and quantitative data analysis tools were used. The data was summarized and analyzed using frequency distributions, correlation and regression analysis. The study established that implementation of strategic plan in Mbarara Red Cross Mbarara Branch, Mbarara District is an issue that requires urgent attention. It was also established that organizational structure if it is not followed, employees will fail to get direction during the implementation phase. It was also established that Leadership goes hand in hand with Resource mobilisation and therefore there must be a direction if all are coordinated. The study concludes that, Organizational Structures must be properly monitored, Top management should always involve employees/ staff to participate in the strategic plan design and implementation and resource mobilisation should be a concern for all. The study recommends that, The Board of Red Cross Society Mbarara Branch should try by all means to emphasize the organizational structure and make employees to follow it, the Vision, Mission of the organization should be emphasized and finally resource mobilization should be a priority.Item Public Participation and Performance of Community Driven Development Projects in Mukono District, Uganda.(Uganda Management Institute, 2016-01) MAGEZI, Christopher; Dr.Mwesigye, Edgar (Supervisor); Kiiza, Alfred Kenneth (Supervisor)This study examined the influence of public participation and performance of community driven development (CDD) projects in Uganda. The study specifically looked at influence of public participation in projects design, projects management and resources management on performance of community driven development. A cross-sectional study design for quantitative and qualitative analysis on 108 respondents was carried out. Data were collected by use of a self-administered questionnaire, interview guide and documentary analysis/ review. Quantitative data were analysed at univariate level basing on the mean, standard deviation and frequencies, bivariate level using correlation coefficient and multivariate using multiple linear regression using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences 17.0 (SPSS). Qualitative data was analysed by content analysis by putting together explanations and substantiating them using the respondents open responses. The study revealed a positive significant relationship between public participation in projects design and performance of community driven development projects; a positive significant relationship between public participation in projects management and performance of community driven development projects; and a positive significant relationship between public participation in resources management and performance of community driven development projects. The study concludes that public participation in; projects design, projects management and resources management, influence performance of community driven development. Therefore, it was recommended that government agencies such as Ministries, local governments; and donor communities/development partners supporting community driven development projects should ensure that there is full community members’ participation especially in non-technical areas of the projects design, projects management and resources management of community driven projectsItem The Role of Ethical Values in Promoting Accountability: A Case of Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries in Uganda(Uganda Management Institute, 2015-11) BEMERA, Livingstone; Kiiza, Alfred Kenneth (Supervisor); Lugemoi, Wilfred Bongomin (Supervisor)The study explored the role of ethical values in promoting accountability in MAAIF. The objectives of the study were; To find out the role of ethics of rights, ethics of justice and ethics of duty in promoting accountability in MAAIF. The study used cross sectional descriptive survey design because it ably facilitated the collection of data from the different strata of respondents and helped the researcher to get the individual characteristics of the variables under study. The study used both primary and secondary sources of data. A self administered Questionnaire and interview guide were used to collect data and analyzed using a statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) software. Correlation and Regression tests were run to establish the relationship between the study variables .The findings revealed significant positive correlations between ethics of rights and accountability (r=.419**, p-value<0.01), ethics of justice and accountability (r=.488**, p-value<0.01), ethics of duty promotes accountability (r=.606**, p-value<0.01). The study reveals that lacking of ethics of rights, weak ethics of justice and inadequate ethics of duty impact of accountability in MAAIF. The study therefore concludes that ethical values affect accountability in MAAIF. The study recommends that more ethical values should be inculcated in MAAIF‘s officers such that they efficiently account for the ministry‘s resources. The study concentrated on examining the role of ethical values in promoting accountability in MAAIF. Future research should attempt to widen the scope of the study to all government ministries.
