Item An Assessment of the Contribution of Social Welfare Support to the Wellbeing of the Elderly in Acowa Sub-County, Amuria District Uganda(Uganda Management Institute, 2011-02) AMUGE, Edep Stella; Prof. Basheka, Benon C.(Supervisor)This study was premised on the assumption that wellbeing of the elderly in Acowa Sub County could be predicted by three factors namely; Housing, Health and Nutrition. The moderator variable was hypothesized to be psychological issues. The study was guided by four objectives, four corresponding research questions and four hypotheses. The study adopted a case study research design that used both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data were collected from both primary and secondary sources which included filled in questionnaires from respondents, interviews, on line journals and book reviews. A sample size of 10% from an estimated total population of 800 elderly persons was drawn basing on recommendations by (Mugenda & Mugenda, 1999) and (Sekaran, 2003). Five (5) key informants were purposively selected making a total of 85 respondents. The response rate was 100% and the survey instruments had an overall reliability coefficient of above 6.0 determined using Cronbach Alpha. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics utilizing percentages; correlation and regression analysis was also used. The study empirically established that, there is a positive and significant correlation between housing, health, nutrition support and wellbeing of the elderly and a negative significant relationship between psychological issues and wellbeing of the elderly. The test using Pearson correlation analysis returned a result of (r = 0.445; p<0.01) for housing; (r = 0.758; p<0.01) for health; (r = 0.500; p<0.01) for nutrition and (r = -0.462; p<0.01) for psychological issues. The strength of the relationship was statistically significant at 0.01 level of significance. The study concluded that social welfare support is critical for elderly persons to achieve physical social and emotional wellbeing. However psychological factors also play a critical moderating role in the achievement of wellbeing. Recommendations adopted from the study findings are provided in chapter five with the hope that housing, health and nutrition of the elderly persons in Acowa Sub County gets due consideration. Limitations and areas for further research are also indicated.Item Contract Management and Quality of Roads under Uganda National Roads Authority: A Case Study of Masaka District(Uganda Management Institute, 2012-02) NAKAFU, Rose; Prof. Basheka, Benon C.(Supervisor)The overall objective of this study was to examine the relationship between Contract Management and the quality of roads constructed and supervised by Uganda National Roads Authority using Masaka District as the case study. The specific objectives were to find out how contract planning affects the quality of roads, to establish the relationship between contract controlling and quality of roads, to establish the relationship between Contract Communication and the quality of roads. The intervening variables were political influence and media publicity. The study employed a triangulation of designs, A case study supported by a correlation design were used to collect both qualitative and quantitative data which was analyzed to give statistical frequencies, correlation statistics and regression models that were used to measure the direction, strength, significance and effect of independent variables on the dependant variable. Study findings revealed that contract communication had the highest correlation of 42% and t-value 5.031, contract control explained for 22.6% while planning explained for 15.9%. This study concluded that contract management has a significant positive relationship with quality of work The study recommended that planning for quality should be highly considered for road contracts as well as incentives for achieving quality be more emphasized to support the regulations on quality. Mechanisms for consistently tracking progress of all infrastructural projects should be put in place to ensure that deviations from expected quality are solved on time, Government to introduce management systems to be used as a quicker means of accessing information related to infrastructural development. Government should also look into low bid award environment as in many cases low bids compromise quality.Item Contribution of Customs Information System to the Performance of the Customs Department Uganda Revenue Authority: A Case Study of Customs Kampala Region(Uganda Management Institute, 2012-01) NAMULESA, Lillian Joy; Prof. Basheka, Benon C.(Supervisor); Sabiiti, Moses (Work-Based Supervisor)The study examined the contribution of Customs Information System (CIS) as the independent variable to the performance of URA’s Customs Department as dependent variable. Performance measures were efficiency, control, and administrative burden and the moderating variable was capacity of users. To explain how CIS could help users perform and control tasks employed the Systems Theory, Resource-Based Theory and Task Technology Fit Theory. It also used a case study design using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. A population sample of 114 was selected using stratified and purposive sampling techniques. Quantitative data was analyzed using frequencies, percentages, mean, standard deviation and correlations established relationships while regression assessed the contribution of the CIS to performance in the Customs Department. Qualitative data analysis involved data reduction, data display, analysis and interpretation. Findings revealed a strong significant relationship between the CIS and efficiency (r = .658, p = .000); CIS and control (r = .711, p = .000); except administrative burden which was (r = -.104; p = .334) in performance of the Customs Department. The CIS accounted for 43.2% of variance in efficiency in performance and 50.5% of variance in control but did not significantly affect the administrative burden. Some of the lessons learnt from the study are; the importance of IS/IT in supporting organizational performance by improving efficiency, giving due consideration to antecedent factors. With regard to control, nature of jobs and values, referred to as standards are explained. Furthermore, IS explains how administrative burden arising from tax regulations can be reduced, while the importance of fit between technology and capacity of users enable the achievement of intended goals. It was concluded that CIS significantly affected performance of the Customs Department. Therefore, URA should continue using CIS by improving data input, processing, output and user capacity to further improve efficiency, control and reduce the administrative burden in performance of the Customs Department.Item Factors Affecting Financial Sustainability of Non-Governmental Organizations (Ngos) In Uganda: A Case Study of Compassion International Funded Programs in Kampala District.(Uganda Management Institute, 2010-04) NAMAKULA, Edith; Prof. Basheka, Benon C.(Supervisor); Oundo, Jescar (Work based supervisor)The purpose of the study was to analyze factors affecting financial sustainability of NGOs focusing on Compassion International Funded programs in Kampala-Uganda. Three factors were considered significant in influencing financial sustainability. These included the size of the financial base, financial controls in place and capacity building. This was a case study research utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection. The study was located in Kampala district and 48 respondents participated in the research. Questionnaires, interviews and documentary review were used as methods of data collection. The qualitative data was analyzed by coding, summarizing using charts and graphs, interpreting findings while quantitative data was analyzed using ANOVA tables and SPSS. Findings indicated that much as guidelines to safe guard the finances were in place, and all staff received orientation training in financial management prior to being recruited into the programs. Concerning financial controls, the research results indicated that all programs are audited and graded annually and are required to implement the financial controls. However, many gaps were established for instance the respondents claim that the orientation trainings were inadequate, many CPC members are semi literate, beneficiary involvement is limited so there is still need for capacity building. Further still, Compassion International funding is increasingly becoming insufficient yet most CDCs rely on it entirely for their funding. The study recommended refresher, fund raising and resource mobilization training. Investment in beneficiary sustainability, capacity building all stakeholders, and implementing the financial controls.Item Parents’ Involvement and Students’ Academic Performance in Ryakasinga Centre for Higher Education –Sheema District –Uganda.(Uganda Management Institute, 2014) MUGUMYA, Duncans; Prof. Basheka, Benon C.(Supervisor); Jennifer, Rose Aduwo (Supervisor)The study examined parents’ involvement and students’ academic performance in Ryakasinga Centre for Higher Education – Sheema district –Uganda. The study was underpinned by Systems theory. The study population was 143 where a sample size of 125 was selected and of these respondents, 107 (86%) responded. Data was collected using the interview guide, a questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS. The findings revealed that there is a strong positive significant relationship between parenting and academic performance (r=0.576**). Learning at home had a correlation of (r=0.378**) and volunteering had (r=0.519**). The study concluded that communication was a major reason for success in academic performance and that a good learning environment positively influences academic performance. The study also recommends that Ryakasinga CHE parents should ensure that their children get balanced diet in feeding; it also recommends that parents of Ryakasinga CHE should check on their children’s discipline, furthermore recommends that parents at Ryakasinga CHE should start setting up their own infrastructure. Lastly, the study recommends that both Ryakasinga CHE parents and administrators should provide holiday packages (booklets constituting of different questions of different subjects) to students that can encourage them to learn at home. These will improve academic performance. Since Ryakasinga CHE is a government school in a rural area, the researcher recommends that other similar studies be made in a private school and in a school within an urban setting.Item Stakeholders’ Participation and Quality Service Delivery among Private Medical Practitioners in Kampala: A Case Study of Case Med Care.(Uganda Management Institute, 2011-01) OKOT, Norah; Prof. Basheka, Benon C.(Supervisor); Kweyamba, Ruhemba I. (Work based Supervisor)This study investigated the influence of stakeholders’ participation on quality service delivery in Case Med Care (CMC), a medical scheme owned and managed by Case Medical Hospital (CMH) in Kampala. The objectives of the study were: to assess the influence of the service organization’s participation on quality service delivery; to determine the influence of the service provider’s influence on quality service delivery; and to examine the influence of the customers’ participation on quality service delivery. In the study, both qualitative and quantitative methods were used, based on a cross sectional design. Out of a target population of 930 participants, a total of 270 respondents out of an expected sample of 274 people successfully participated representing a response rate of 98.5 %. Data were collected by way of questionnaires, observations, interviews and documentary reviews, and engaged the sampling methods of stratified, systematic, judgmental, and simple random sampling. Qualitative data were analyzed by thematic and deductive techniques, while quantitative data analysis was done with the help of Statistical Program for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 16. Overall, stakeholder participation had a positive influence on quality of healthcare. The strength of participatory influence however varied among the three stakeholders studied which were; the service organization, the service provider and customers. It was found out that service organization and customers influenced quality service delivery significantly, but that of the service provider was very weak. Therefore, there is need to affirmatively interest and engage the service provider more in participation in view of their great potential in influencing quality healthcare delivery; also especially because, they are the final renderers of the actual service to the final consumers, who are the ultimate determinants of quality healthcare.
