Abstract
The study examined the relationship between reward systems and performance of teachers in government aided secondary schools in Kampala District. The major objective was to investigate the relationship between reward systems and performance of teachers in government aided secondary schools in Kampala district. A sample of 183 teachers was selected out of the 240 teachers who were drawn from five purposively selected government secondary schools. Key informants included ten (10) Head teachers and Deputy Head teachers, ten (10) Director of studies and their Assistants, 123 subject teachers, and 40 students. A survey design was used to collect data, both qualitative and quantitative techniques through questionnaires, interviews to conduct research from teachers, Head teachers, Deputies, Director of studies, their assistants and students. The data collected was analyzed and processed using a computer soft ware known as statistical Packages for Social Scientists (SPSS).Pearson correlation and regression analysis was used to measure the degree and strength of the reward systems and performance of teachers in selected government aided secondary schools in Kampala district. The study revealed that there was a relationship between Non-financial rewards and performance of teachers in government aided secondary schools. The study recommends that the government of Uganda through the Ministry of Education and sports improve on the rewards of teachers so as to motivate the teachers to perform this may improve on the quality of students produced. The following were suggested areas for further research. The relationship between management styles, working environment among others and performance of teachers in government aided secondary schools should be studied in details. Reward systems and performance of teachers in government aided primary schools. Also a need to conduct a similar study in another district to check on the reward systems generally In Uganda.
