Item Factors Affecting Sustainability of Private Vocational Training Institutions in Uganda. A case Study of Kampala District.(Uganda Management Institute, 2010-07) KUNYA, Joshua.; Muhenda, Mary Basaasa (Supervisor); Kyobe, Ethel (Supervisor)This study aimed at analysing factors that affect sustainability of private vocational training institutions in Kampala district, Uganda. The study followed a case study design using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The study population included; board of governors, heads of institutions, finance department staff and instructors from private vocational training institutions of faith based, non governmental organizations and private/ individual orientation. A self administered questionnaire following a 5-point Likert scale was used. In addition, interviews, focus group discussion guides and observation checklist were used. The response rate was fifty five percent (55%). The data were analysed using different statistical techniques which included descriptive statistics, multiple and hierarchical regression. Regression results indicated that government policies, mobilization strategy development, resource gap identification and participative leadership in that order had the highest effect on the sustainability. The influence of moderating variable was significant only under delegative leadership. Conclusions made indicated that leadership style dimension had the least effect, mobilization process had a moderate effect while policy environment had the highest effect on sustainability. Recommendations drawn from the study were that heads of institutions should adopt participative leadership style, enforce training of staff and top management in mobilization strategy development. The Government should formulate policies and strategies to regulate institution owners’ influence on the management of private vocational training institutions. In addition, the Government should provide adequate funds to develop the infrastructure. Further research will consider factors like political and economic environments that could affect sustainability, in addition to influence of international policies on vocational training in private institutions.Item Assessing the Factors Influencing the Growth of Slums in Urban Local Governments of Uganda: A case Study of Soroti Municipality(Uganda Management Institute, 2011-02) PADE, Joseph Walter; Basheka, Benon(Supervisor); Moki, Abubakar Mohammed(Supervisor)This study was an investigation into the factors that contribute to the growth of slums in Uganda, with Soroti municipality as a Case study. The objectives of the study included: to establish the effect of urban poverty on the growth of slums in Soroti municipality; to find out the contribution of the system of land tenure on the growth of slums in Soroti municipality; to find out the contribution of urban planning framework to the growth of slums in Soroti municipality. The study employed a cross sectional survey design and used both qualitative and quantitative techniques in data collection. The study population was 1302, from which a sample of 310 was selected. The quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson coefficients, and regression analysis. Qualitative data was summarized and quoted or paraphrased in some cases. The findings revealed that, Land tenure had a correlation of .452** towards the growth of slums. Urban planning framework had a correlation of .573**, towards the growth of slums in Soroti municipality. The Coefficient of poverty was 0.328, implying that its effect on Slum growth was 32.8%. Basing on those findings, the researcher came up with a number of recommendations among which were that; Government should provide more funding to SACCOS and deliberately introduce the housing component in their framework to enable the urban poor save for housing development, this should be coupled with establishment of housing finance institutions with affordable interest rates. Government should initiate land banking programmes to provide land for social housing for the urban poor. There should be a deliberate policy to build capacity of local authorities on urban planning and management coupled with an urgent programme for restructuring of urban local Governments to provide enough personnel for urban planning and development control. There should also be massive sensitization programmes throughout the country to create awareness among the communities on urban planning and development control processes and allocation of conditional funds purposely for urban planning activities in the country.Item Factors Affecting the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Usage in Teaching and Learning in Institutions of High Learning in Uganda. A case of Bukalasa Agricultural College(BAC)(Uganda Management Institute, 2013-04) Kiggundu, Wilson TamaleIn decades, Researchers in educational technology have searched for factors to explain trainers' (Teachers and Lecturers) and trainees (students) acceptance and resistance to using Information and communication Technology (ICT) for Instruction that is Teaching and Learning. This study investigated the influence of cost of ICT training materials, Skills development in ICT and administrative support towards ICT usage in Teaching and Learning in Institutions of higher learning and in this case Bukalasa Agricultural College. A cross sectional survey design (quantitative and qualitative) was employed and inorder to emperically investigate the extent to which factors influence ICT usage in Teachimg and Learning, A self administered questionnaire was administered to a sample of 36 lecturers and 240 students. Interviewss were also carried out with 4 administrators from the Administration section. Of the respondents, 62% were male and 32% were female. Observation and documentary review guides were used to obtain information that could not be obtained by use of self administered questionnaire and the interview guide. Using Pearson Linear Co-relation Co-efficient, Results reveal that cost of ICT training materials negatively influenced ICT usage in teaching and learning where as skills development in ICT and administrative support positively influenced ICT usage in Teaching and Learning. This study suggests that ICT usage in teaching and learning institutions of higher learning using Bukalasa Agricultural College as the case study was minimal. Following the study findings, Recommendations were made to encourage stakeholders(administrators, lecturers and students) to explore the possibility of being trained on how to use computers in teaching and learning rather than operating computers. Further research is thus recommended on the replica of this study to be conducted in other institutions of higher learning in other parts of Uganda. Research could be conducted on other variables such as lecturers' perception, and individuals' characteristics, students' ICT skills, and attitude that may affect ICT usage in teaching and learning in institutionsof higher learning in Uganda.Item Parents' Participation and Academic Performance in Target Community College, Luwero District, Uganda(Uganda Management Institute, 2014-03) Businge, Jane Afra MusinguziThis study was conducted to examine the effect of parents’ participation and academic performance at T.C.C. The objectives of the study were; to find out the role played by parents in the management of T.C.C, to investigate the influence of parents’ participation in school financing on students’ academic performance and to find out the influence of parents participation on the management of students’ discipline on the academic performance in T.C.C. Relevant literature and documents on academic performance were reviewed. The study adopted a cross section survey design. A section of students, teachers, parents and administrators were involved. In the study, a sample of 33 students, 10 teachers.169parents and 3 administrators were selected out of which 33 students, 9 teachers, 113 parents and 3 administrators participated hence making a response rate of 73.5% Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected, analyzed, interpreted and presented. The findings of the study were; parental involvement in school’s planning has not been realized in T.C.C, that the parents in T.C.C have not been adequately involved in the financing of school activities, which has led to financial resources constraints and, consequently, impinged on the students’ academic performance. It was also established that parents’ involvement in students discipline has had no effect on academic performance in T.C.C. It was, therefore, concluded that parental involvement in the management of school discipline should be complemented with participation in planning/management and financing of the school if good academic performance is to be realised. The study recommendations that were suggested included; the need for government to make a policy on the specific roles parents should play in school management, government should increase funding of USE program managers of T.C.C devise non-tuition related means of financing the school and focus should not be on discipline alone but also on other variables like quality of students at the point of entry in senior one, quality of teaching, internal efficiency of the school and staff motivation.Item Head Teachers Leadership Styles and Learners Performance in Primary Schools in Gulu District, Uganda(Uganda Management Institute, 2014-03) ADIMOLA, Christopher; Karyeija, Gerald Kagambirwe (Supervisor); Barifaijo, Maria Kaguhangire(Supervisor)This study was carried to find out the contribution of head teachers’ leadership styles in the learners’ performance and possibly suggest positive ways of improving the performance. The study examined the contributions of autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire leadership styles head teachers are using in the schools in Gulu District. The study used a cross sectional design to study and secure the depth of the data. Two approaches were used, quantitative and qualitative concurrently. Numbers of theories were cited and early researchers’ documentations visited. Observation, interview guides documentary reviews and questionnaire were some of the methods used. The collected data was coded, interpreted and analysed using the SPSS computer programme. The opinions and the findings indicated that the head teachers’ leadership styles were major contributors of performance in schools among learners. The result of the study advised that head teachers need to practice all the three styles of leadership namely autocratic, democratic, and laissez-fair and the finding advice that they should avoid dwelling on one style of leadership alone. It was also found that an institution would run best with support from other players which have been found in the democratic leadership style mostly. The recommendations made were to have more findings on the poor performance of learners .Autocratic leadership style be limitedly practise in the schools since the outcome may be dangerous to the learners. Head teachers should share with the subordinate’s ideas in order to improve learners’ performance. The communities should fully participate in school activities in order to improve performance and head teachers should work together and closely with the stakeholders in the community to improve performance.Item Coordinating Center Tutors Leadership Styles and the Performance of Primary Schools in Amuru district, Uganda.(Uganda Management Institute, 2014-04) Were, Abrahams BraisThe study investigated and sought to link the Coordinating Centre Tutors leadership styles with the performance of primary schools with particular reference to Amuru District, Uganda. The research was conducted using both quantitative and qualitative approaches using survey, and correlation as research designs. Data was collected using questionnaires, interview guides, focus group discussion guide as well as review of available documents, and records from CCTs and DEOs. Respondents made of DEO, DIS, Inspectors, teachers, head teachers, and SMC members formed a population of 184 members. Data collected was analyzed using the statistical package for social scientists (SPSS), where conclusions were drawn from tables and figures from the package. The study revealed that CCTs employed the various path-goal leadership styles that helped them earn the trust and respect of the stakeholders involved in primary schools. The study also found that CCT’s work had made positive impact on the performance of schools. The findings further revealed that CCT’s and DEO’s office worked together to improve performance in schools. However, it was also noted that there was a general lack of organized outreach activities developed for schools, low ability of pupils in reading, writing, and interpreting simple numeracy. The study concludes that CCT’s leadership styles have significant impact and influence on overall performance of schools. The investigation recommends competence profiling of CCTs on what the schools, districts and PTCs expect to do for any given term. It also recommends training of CCTs in mentoring, coaching, and supporting skills.Item The University based factors and quality of service delivery to students living with disabilities in higher education institutions: A case of Kyambogo University(Uganda Management Institute, 2014-11) Adeke, EsterThe study investigated the university based factors and quality of service delivery to students living with disabilities at Kyambogo University. The study was based on the following research objectives; to establish the extent to which accessibility contributes to the quality of service delivery to the disabled students at Kyambogo University, to establish the extent to which curriculum has contributed towards quality of service delivery to disabled students at Kyambogo University and to establish the extent to which staff capacity contributes towards quality of service delivery to the disabled students‟ at Kyambogo University. The study employed a case study design and both quantitative and qualitative approaches. In total, a sample of 125 respondents was chosen who included administrators, technical staff, non technical staff and disabled students. The data collection methods used were questionnaires and interviews. Data was analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient and regression analysis. The study findings revealed that there is a positive significant relationship between accessibility and quality of service delivery, there is a positive significant relationship between curriculum and quality of service delivery and lastly staff capacity and quality of service delivery to students with disability in KYU is positively significantly related. It was concluded that: (i) Kyambogo University still has a problem given the fact that some buildings are not accessible to students with disabilities. Some students have not been able to access information given the delay in feedback, and also some information put on notice boards is not accessible given the fact that notice boards are crowded all the time. Some of the vital information on notice boards is removed before the PWDs can access it. Lecturers are conducted in crowded classes that make it uncomfortable to students with disabilities to access. (ii) The curriculum does not cater for people with disabilities and needs to be adjusted; some courses have contents that don‟t suit the PWDs in this sense. The lecturers use a style of teaching that does not favor the impaired; the absence of brailles has worsened the whole situation. (iii) Some of the KYU staff members lack the expertise in handling PWDs and therefore are not trained on how to deal with students with disabilities.. The students complained of not receiving enough guidance from lecturers. It was recommended that (i)There is need to improve on the infrastructure (roads, buildings) electronic devices (modern ones e.g internet services with jaws programmes for the blind, buildings with loop systems for the deaf. KYU should employee the visual impaired person responsible for braille Many times the students meet the costs of the services rendered to them by guides and interpreters. (ii) The curriculum should be adjusted to suit some learners with visual impairments by removing some contents in the courses taught that don‟t favor the visually impaired. (iii) Lecturers should get sufficient training on how to handle and deal with the PWDs in class. And lastly, there is need to train the staff on how to handle students with disabilities. Staff training on overall school inclusion plan should be high on the list of needs as well.Item Institutional self-assessment and quality of higher education: A case study of Uganda Management Institute(Uganda Management Institute, 2015-01) Okeng, Patrick MichealThe study was concerned with the relationship between institutional self-assessment and quality of education at Uganda Management Institute. The research was guided by three objectives which aimed at establishing the relationship between governance structures, teaching and educational facilities and quality of education. By use of a case study design, 296 respondents were used as the sample size with 289 responding to the questionnaires and 7 of them interviewed and all these were important in investigating the topic at hand. By use of the research hypothesis, the objectives were tested: the three hypotheses, (1) governance structure significantly influence quality of education, (2) teaching significantly influences quality of education and (3) educational facilities significantly influence quality of education. It was noted that; the institute was highly formalized power and authority concentrated at the top; however this never had a significant influence on quality of education. The study also revealed that; teaching methods were rarely varied, assessment strategies lacked alternatives and curriculum was rigidly emphasized while also noting that the educational facilities such as; library, lecture room space and computers were inadequate and insufficient. Therefore the institute needed to regularly engage in institutional self-assessment so as to unearth the gaps within its structure especially with regard to governance structure, teaching and facilities. Improvements in these aspects were thought to be important yardsticks towards achieving and enhancing quality education in the light of; accountability, timely feedback, value for money and customer satisfaction.Item Work Force Diversity and Labour Productivity in Regional Referral Hospitals in Uganda. A case study of Fortportal Regional Referral Hospital(Uganda Management Institute, 2015-01) Kalenzi, VictorThis study investigated the effects of workforce diversity on labour productivity of employees in Uganda regional referral hospitals with Fort Portal Regional Referral hospital as a case study. Structured questionnaires were used in the study to collect quantitative data and interviews were used to collect qualitative data from key informants. The results of the survey were analyzed to obtain frequencies, percentages and correlations. Study findings reveal that there is a positive significant relationship between gender and labour productivity (r=251, p=.010). Therefore improvement in gender sensitive balancing and respect leads to improvement in labour productivity. Also there is a positive significant relationship between culture and labour productivity (r=.217, p=0.27), implying that improvement in cultural aspects and respecting cultural values leads to improvement in labour productivity. There is a positive and significant relationship between education and labor productivity (r=325, p=0.001), therefore improvement in education helps improve labour productivity. It was therefore recommended that there is need to put in place a comprehensive gender based policy, promote gender inclusion, introduce sensitization to appreciate different cultural differences, put in place an education and training policy and encourage mentorship.Item Factors Affecting the Retention of Uganda National Examinations Board(UNEB) Examiners. A case of UNEB Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) Examiners(Uganda Management Institute, 2015-01) Lunkuse, SylviaThis study assesses the factors affecting the retention of Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) examiners with specific reference to Primary Leaving examinations. Geographically the study was particularly conducted at St.Maria Gorret Katende in Mpigi district, Covering period of five years(2008-2012)this period immediately precedes the start of the research and therefore has the most recent and relevant experiences regarding PLE marking. The research idea is summarised in a conceptual framework that portrays the relationships between the study variables. The study sought to examine the factors affecting retention of PLE examiners by UNEB in which motivational factors formed the independent variable while examiner retention was the dependant variable. Literature was reviewed under themes that reflect specific research objectives and the research variables, this aimed at exploring information gaps. In this study, a cross-sectional research design was used. This was adopted in order to collect data from several sample population frames in more or less the same period of time in the one marking centre selected to represent the other marking centres. The design was based on both quantitative and qualitative methods for data collection and analysis. Particularly, the questionnaire and interview methods were used for data collection and both statistical and interpretive techniques were adopted for presentation and analysis of such data. Accordingly, the study findings reveal that there is a positive effect on the motivational factors as regards the retention of examiners at PLE marking level. In other words, when these examiners are not assured of such benefits like; a pay system which is commensurate with the amount of work that they are doing for the institution, favourable organisational policies and practices and a good working environment at marking centres, they are more likely not to stay on, It was therefore concluded that motivation is the most underlying factor in retaining examiners in the marking of PLE. Considering the research findings and conclusions, the study recommended for a clear reward structure, periodic revision of contracts signing, organisational policies and practices that meet the current trends of the working environment and the working conditions to be assessed periodically for a better retention strategy of examiners.Item The contribution of Infection Control to Minimizing Tuberculosis transmission in Mbarara main Prison -Uganda(Uganda Management Institute, 2015-01) Asiimwe, RaymondThe study, investigated the contribution of infection control measures to minimizing TB transmission in Mbarara main prison. It was observed that the policy of being sent to an area where somebody cannot easily get acclimatized to the existing conditions presses the employees so hard. It was observed that it is a policy that each staff should reside in her parish of work. Vehicles should be parked at 6pm. The most notable cultural practice was religious devotion and decent dressing. It was observed that leadership style is not democratic but authoritarian. Under this style, some employees desire to be pushed. Whenever they are not pushed there is delay in delivery of results. Findings further revealed sometimes the employees are given unclear roles and responsibilities. It was further revealed that some tasks are allocated on the basis of friendship at Rakai Area Development Programme. It was recommended that: there is need to design policies that are employee friendly or socialization policies. Policies that limit employ accessibility to company property like vehicles should be discarded. The organization should strengthen the culture of training. Providing ample training and development opportunities can discourage turnover by keeping employees satisfied and well-positioned for future growth opportunities.
